2016-2017 NOVELS:
Students will need the paperback versions of the two novels listed below (in addition to the summer reading novel: The Giver by Lois Lowry). It is important that every student has the same edition for the purpose of referring to page numbers and annotations, etc. For these novels, a paperback version for the purpose of annotation will be required (no electronic formats).

The novels you'll need to purchase are as follows:

  • Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys (ISBN: 9780399160301)
  • Lord of the Flies by William Golding (ISBN: 9780399501487)
*note that Salt to the Sea has not yet been released in paperback form...waiting to purchase until a few weeks prior to the time it is due in class is recommended

I appreciate the opportunity I am given each year to become a part of the lives of my
students. You are entrusting me with your child, and I pledge to give my best on a
daily basis to help him/her develop the skills and habits necessary to secure a bright
future. The poem below is a statement of my firm belief that, together, we can ensure
your child experiences many great successes this year.

Unity

I dreamed I stood in a studio, and watched two sculptors there.
The clay they used was a young child’s mind, and they fashioned it with care.

One was a teacher: the tools that were used were books, music, and art.
One was a parent with a guiding hand and a gentle, loving heart.

Day after day the teacher toiled with touch that was deft and sure.
While the parent standing by his side polished and smoothed it o’er.

And when at last the task was done, they were proud of what they had wrought.
For the things they had molded into the child could neither be sold nor bought.

And they each agreed they would have failed, if either had worked alone.
For behind the parent stood the school, and behind the teacher, the home.
